Pondera County, Montana (Map It) was created on February 17, 1919 from Chouteau County and Teton County. The county was named originally pend d'oreille, French words meaning "ear pendant"; the name was changed to a form resembling the phonetic spelling to avoid confusion with the lake and town of the same name in Idaho and of a county in Washington.

Pondera County is bordered by Glacier County (north), Toole County (north), Liberty County (east), Chouteau County (east), Teton County (south), Flathead County (west).
