Vilas County, Wisconsin (Map It) was created on April 12, 1893 from Oneida County. The county was named in honor of William Vilas (1840-1908), officer in the Civil War, United States Postmaster General (1885-1888), United States Secretary of the Interior(1888-1889), and Senator from Wisconsin (1891-1897).

Vilas County is bordered by Gogebic County, Michigan (north), Iron County, Michigan (northeast), Forest County (southeast), Oneida County (south), Price County (southwest), Iron County (west).
