Maverick County, Texas (Map It) was created on February 2, 1856 from Kinney County. This county was named for Samuel Augustus Maverick (1803–1870), a rancher, signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence, and representative in the Republic of Texas legislature .

Maverick County is bordered by Kinney County (north), Zavala County (east), Dimmit County (east), State of Coahuila, Mexico (southwest).
