Clay County, Texas (Map It) was created on December 24, 1857 from Cooke County. This county was named for U.S. Senator Henry Clay from Kentucky and ninth secretary of state of the United States (1825–1829) .

Clay County is bordered by Jefferson County, Oklahoma (north), Montague County (east), Jack County (south), Wichita County (west), Archer County (west), Cotton County, Oklahoma (northwest) .

Some early records  prior to organization on 1860 may be located in Montague County. Records of the first organization were transferred to Montague County, where many were destroyed in a courthouse fire on 25 February 1873.
