Swain County, North Carolina (Map It) was created on 1871 from Jackson County and Macon County. This county was named for David Lowry Swain (1801–1868), a governor of North Carolina and president of the University of North Carolina.

Swain County is bordered by Sevier County, Tennessee (north), Haywood County (east), Jackson County (southeast), Macon County (south), Graham County (southwest), Blount County, Tennessee (northwest).

Old Swain County Courthouse

The Swain County Courthouse is located in Bryson City, North Carolina. The Clerk's Office DOES NOT DO RESEARCH. Most staff will assist people in finding the materials, but it is up to the individual to do the research.

The following dates indicates what vital, land, probate, and court records are in Swain county. The date listed for each record is usually the earliest registration filed. The date does not indicate that there are alot records for that year and does not mean that all such events were actually filed with the clerk. On January 7, 1908 the Courthouse was burned by rioters. No records were saved.
