Newton County, Texas (Map It) was created on April 26, 1846 from Jasper County. This county was named for John Newton (1755–1780), a veteran of the Revolutionary War.

Courthouse, built in 1902, burned on August 4, 2000.  The Courthouse was rebuilt and restored in 2002.
