Cass County, Minnesota (Map It) was created on March 31, 1851 (Organized in 1872; Deorganized in 1876; Reorganized in 1897) from Dakota County, Mankahto County, Pembina County and Wahnata County. The county was named in honor of Lewis Cass (1782–1866). Explored upper Mississippi to Cass Lake in 1820; governor, Michigan Territory, 1813-31; U.S. Secretary of War, 1831-36; U.S. Senator from Michigan 1945-57; U.S. Secretary of State, 1857-60.
