Buchanan County, Iowa (Map It) was created on December 21, 1837 from Dubuque County. Buchanan County was named in honor of James Buchanan (1857–1861) of Pennsylvania, who was instrumental in the acquisition of the Wisconsin Territory, which included this county. Every real estate transaction that takes place begins in the Recorder's Office. One of the major duties of the office is the management of public records.
