Brown County, Illinois (Map It) was created on February 1, 1839 from Schuyler County (portions of present area was formerly included in Schuyler County (1825–1839), Pike County (1821–1825), Madison County (1812–1821) and St. Clair County (1795–1812)). Brown County was named for Jacob Brown (1775–1828), a successful American Revolution army officer responsible for Great Lakes defenses .

Brown County is bordered by  Schuyler County (north), Cass County (east), Morgan County (southeast), Pike County (south), Adams County (west)
