Grant County, West Virginia (Map It) was created on February 14, 1866 from portions of Hardy County. The county was named in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885), General of the Union Army during the Civil War, Secretary of War (1868), and President of the United States (1869-1877).

Grant County is bordered by Mineral County (northeast), Hardy County (east), Pendleton County (south), Tucker County (west), Garrett County, Maryland (northwest).
