Kanabec County, Minnesota (Map It) was created on October 12, 1858 (Organized in 1881) from Pine County. The county was named for the Snake River. Kanabec is the Ojibway word for snake.

Kanabec County is bordered by Aitkin County (north), Pine County (east), Chisago County (southeast), Isanti County (south), Mille Lacs County (west).

The Kanabec County Courthouse is located in Mora, Minnesota. At some time Kanabec County was attached to Chisago County for county and or judicial purposes. Some early records may be found there.
