Wapello County, Iowa (Map It) was created on February 17, 1843 (Organized in 1844) from Unorganized Territory. Wapello County was named in honor of Wapello, a Native American Chief “Wau-ba-law, ” “Waupello, ” or “Wa-pel-lo.” Chief Wapello was the second-in-command over the combined Sac and Fox Indians in the Black Hawk War

Wapello County is bordered by Mahaska County (northwest), Keokuk County (northeast), Jefferson County (east), Davis County (south), Monroe County (west).

Every real estate transaction that takes place begins in the Recorder's Office. One of the major duties of the office is the management of public records. As a result, accuracy and preservation of records are a must in the Recorder's Office.
